“Humpback Whales Generate 'Thrums'”
Presented by
Dr. Fred Sharpe
Salish Sea-based Whale Biologist
Sunday, November 16, 3 p.m.
Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden Historical State Park
Humpback whales produce varied aerial sounds including trumpets, shrikes, hoots and clicks. Fred Sharpe and his team have been listening to these sounds for many years, but recently turned their attention to recording the low frequency, elephant-like, far-traveled, aerial rumbles or “thrums”. The lecture will feature sounds, slides and the scientific inquiry conducted at Five Finger Lighthouse in Southeast Alaska, and what might be learned from these remarkable aerial signals.
To keep this lectureseries accessible to all, regardless of the ability to pay, there is no set charge for these lecture events; however, donations are always welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks to the Darrow Family for their ongoing support

PTMSC is proud to host a new exhibit at our downtown Flagship Landing Gallery. "Under the Surface of the Salish Sea" showcases a selection of fiber and textile works inspired by life beneath the waves. Each work is created by a member of Peninsula Fiber Artists, and reflects a unique connection to the local marine environment. The exhibit features two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces, using a variety of materials and techniques that highlight the artistry and creativity of their makers. Works will be available for purchase, with a portion of the sales benefitting conservation programs at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.
There is no admission fee, though donations are always welcome.
As a member, you support PTMSC's work for a healthy Salish Sea, plus you get discounts on programs and a 10% discount on every purchase in both gift shops.
