The Guild isn’t known for taking the easy road. We have always been an organization that focuses on trying to do the ‘right’ thing even when it’s the difficult thing. For example, responding creatively and effectively to climate change isn’t easy, but it’s what we need to do. We’re bringing fire back to forests that need it even though it would be easier to focus elsewhere. Thankfully, we have new help to make it happen: Carlos Saiz joined the staff in the Southwest, we have great participants in our mentorship program, and we’re hiring in the Lake States!
Thank you for being part of this path – it may not always be easy, but it is rewarding.
NEWS FROM THE FOREST
A return to burning as usual after everything has changed
Written by Carlos Saiz and Sam Berry
Glorieta Adventure Camps (the Camps) is located on over 2000 acres of forested land that has thousands of visitors each summer and is home to 100 full-time residents. It is located just to the southwest of the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon (HP/CC) Fire of summer 2022. With so much at stake, The Camps chose a proactive approach to wildfire resilience, including thinning, masticating, and creating burn piles.
I’m from Ribera, a rural community in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. Working for the Forest Stewards Guild, first as a Forest Stewards Youth Corps (FSYC) crew member, then a FSYC crew leader, and now a mentee, has furthered my interest in conservation and forestry and taught me a wide range of knowledge and skills, from plant ecology to GIS, ecological monitoring to networking, fence repair to team building.
I am the Southwest Fire and Fuels Coordinator for the Forest Stewards Guild. My journey in this field started a decade ago with the City of Santa Fe Fire Department (SFFD). The SFFD mainly deals with structural fire suppression and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). However, in the early 2000’s, The Wildland Atalaya Hand Crew was formed, and that’s where I came in. This led me to my passion: helping my community in fire resiliency, which I continue at the Guild.

The Guild is deeply engaged in this 2-3-2 Cohesive Strategy Partnership. Watch for news regularly about our efforts and those of partners during this multi-year initiative. This project is one example of increased support and funding nationwide for collaborative restoration efforts, as outlined in a recent press release is available here.
Farm Bill Recommendations for Community-based and Collaborative Capacity. The Guild is making recommendations, developed as part of the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition (RVCC), for effective use and delivery of Farm Bill programs and authorities: the capacity of community-based entities and locally led collaboratives and partnerships.
The Guild joined 13 other groups to create the Wildfire Resilience Coalition to advocate for transformational change in how wildfire risk is managed in the United States. A critical component of this work will be to leverage the investments and authorities for wildfire resilience in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
