“Changing how we eat will not be enough, on its own, to save the planet, but we cannot save the planet without changing how we eat.”
—Jonathan Safran Foer, We Are the Weather
As Safran Foer writes in his stirring book (our April book club selection), the urgency of climate change calls upon us to not only know about the planet’s plight, but to believe it – enough to collectively wean ourselves off of animal agriculture, especially factory farming. Strikingly, he calls our planet an “animal farm.”
Plant Powered Metro New York spends most days and months of the year teaching about human health and nutrition, but this Earth Month we’re shifting more of our focus to the health of our environment. Fueling our bodies with mostly, if not only, plants can heal both us and our ecosystems, and this natural alignment is truly miraculous and hopeful. This April, we invite you to join us for a series of events to dig into the critical role of food in the health of our planet and celebrate the power of food that begins with a seed.
Join Jolene Bowers, PhD, microbiologist and public health researcher, as she explores the interconnection between all living things and our dependence on natural resources. Dr. Bowers will discuss the multiple threats to our planet and how our food choices are critical to healing. Following the discussion, you’ll be invited to participate in small break-out rooms to discuss practical action steps.
GreenThumb Grow Together Conference Workshop: Plant Powered Nutrition for Vibrant Health Wednesday, April 20, 6:00 - 7:30 PM – In-Person, East New York, Brooklyn Registration opens in early April
As part of NYC Parks’ GreenThumb Conference, we’re heading outside to the Poppa and Momma Jones Historic Community Garden to talk about food’s role in healing. Led by community chefs Kelebohile Nkhereanye and Anthony Spino, you’ll learn how to make delicious plant-based meals from diverse culinary traditions and hear how a plant-based lifestyle can help you find better health.
Get active and connect with how our food is grown with this family-friendly event at The Lifestyle Building in Astoria. Practice some yoga, explore the urban garden, and hear how whole plant foods nourish our bodies and help protect the planet.
Join our discussion of Brooklynite Jonathan Safran Foer’s We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast. In this eye-opening book, Safran Foer explores the central global dilemma: the task of saving the planet given our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. The author suggests that only our collective action will save our home, and it all starts with what we eat – and don’t eat.
