Proper Roof Ventilation is Critical for Your Home

As a homeowner planning a roof replacement, you likely focus on selecting a high-quality shingle and an experienced installer. While these are vital, many homeowners overlook the importance of proper attic ventilation in protecting their investment.
The Consequences of Poor Ventilation
Inadequate attic ventilation triggers a variety of structural deterioration issues and premature material failure. Key issues include:
Decking Degradation: Trapped moisture leads to warped, rotten, or moldy roof decking (sheathing), compromising the roof's structural integrity.
Premature Shingle Aging: Excessive heat "bakes" shingles from the underside, causing cracking, curling, and rapid granule loss.
Fastener Failure: Condensed moisture corrodes roofing nails, reducing their "pull-out" strength and leading to shingle blow-offs during high winds.
Ice Damming: In Ohio winters, trapped heat melts snow on the upper roof; the runoff refreezes at the cold eaves, forcing water under the shingles, which can bypass underlayment and saturate wall insulation or interior drywall.
The Science: Heat and Moisture
The two primary enemies of your roof are heat and moisture. Activities such as bathing, cooking, and standard occupancy generate over a gallon of moisture daily. Without an escape route, this vapor migrates into the attic. In winter, without proper ventilation, it condenses on the cold underside of the roof deck.
During the summer months, solar radiation can heat poorly ventilated attics to over 150°F, prematurely aging your shingles and increasing utility bills as heat penetrates attic insulation and overburdens your AC unit.
Achieving a Balanced System
Effective ventilation requires a balanced system of intake and exhaust. The goal is to have 50%–60% of the Net Free Ventilating Area (NFVA) come from the intake (low on the roof) and the remainder from the exhaust (high on the roof). This creates a "stack effect," pulling cool, dry air from the eaves and pushing hot, moist air out the peak.
Technical Pitfalls: "Short-Circuiting"
A common mistake is mixing exhaust types (e.g., combining a ridge vent with a power vent or gable vent). This "short-circuits" the airflow; the exhaust vents pull air from each other rather than drawing from the intake at the eaves. This leaves the lower attic space stagnant.
For older homes without soffit vents, modern solutions like edge vents can be installed at the roof’s eaves to provide necessary intake. While it is most cost-effective to address these issues during a reroof, ventilation corrections can be made to existing systems. Learn How to Spot and Avoid Investment Scams

Lately, people are losing big money on investment scams. FTC data reports losses of more than $7.9 billion in investment scams. Do you know how to spot and avoid investment scams?
Scammers might reach you through social media, WhatsApp, or through online ads, promising you’ll make a lot of money quickly. These messages might also come from a friend or love interest offering you “coaching” to learn how to make a fortune in stocks, forex, or cryptocurrency. After you invest, they’ll often say your investments are doing well, maybe even showing fake “proof” that you’re making money. However, the investment isn’t real, and you end up losing all your money.
To avoid an investment scam:
Remember that investments always involve risk. Scammers want you to think their opportunity is risk-free when it’s not.
Check out the reputation of the investment company, its officials, and its promoters. Search online with their name plus words like “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.”
Check for licenses and registrations. You can use the free search tool on Investor.gov to check out anyone recommending or selling investments. For investments in precious metals or coins, check out the CFTC database.
