Dear Community Members:
In my life, I've been very fortunate and blessed to be able to coach adaptive sports and help to build an organization dedicated to creating greater access and opportunities, leveling the playing field and building more societal inclusion. Recently, I was coming home from coaching and this really hit me deep in my body and brought tears to my eyes. Have you had this feeling about your vocation?
This weekend I spent time at Camp Paivika in Crestline which is operated by Ability First. There are numerous ways to level the playing field and after spending a night, out of the heat, I participated in an amazing camp experience. Camp Paivika, for those of you who have attended, know that this is the same as any other over night camp. There were numerous activities, I did some wheelchair basketball with campers, that included games, talent shows, nature hikes, arts and crafts, swimming and so much more. I'm not really sure but I wonder if they also have the same scrumptious and very healthy food, although campers did put whip cream on their pancakes. (There were even fresh baked churros and tortilla chips.)
The staff seemed very attentive and focused on their duties. There was even a group of staff from Mexico! Staff/volunteers also included people with disability.
The main point for me about Camp Paivika and Ability First is that they have leveled the playing field and have been doing this for decades. It also brings home the fact that there must be access for all, something, which really doesn't take much. I applaud the efforts of Ability First/Camp Paivika in making the world a better place for all. I will be going back in three weeks for Family camp. I hope to see some of you there.
Food for Thought-The United States continues to change in terms of our politics. Along with many others, I feel that political violence, and just violence in general, is not appropriate for resolving issues. However, as we all know, violence is part of our everyday lives and is weaved into the history and fabric of our nation.
I sometimes post what might be described as political articles on my personal Facebook page, but I do my best to be respectful. I do know people that are politically opposite from me. I look at them as people with their very different life experience than mine. At least we can talk and we don't have to talk about politics. Yes, it's difficult for me, but the bottom line is that we are all trying to live our lives and find some contentment and peace to the best of our abilities. The more that we can talk and respect others the better for the future of our species.
We have so many activities continuing and starting up. We are in the midst of planning our hiking and golfing seasons, with a Special Olympics team planned for golfing. On August 7th we are starting our bowling program at Fantasy Springs and you can sign up below. All are welcome! Also look in future issues for bowling starting Yucca Valley!

He sido muy afortunado y bendecido en mi vida al poder entrenar deportes de adaptación y ayudar a construir una organización dedicada a crear un mayor acceso y oportunidades, nivelando el campo de juego y construyendo una mayor inclusión social. Hace poco, volvía a casa de entrenar y esto me golpeó en lo más profundo del cuerpo y me hizo llorar. ¿Cuántas personas sienten realmente esto sobre su vocación y su tiempo en la tierra?
Este fin de semana pude pasar un tiempo en el Campamento Paivika en Crestline, operado por Ability First. Hay numerosas maneras de nivelar el campo de juego y después de pasar una noche, fuera del calor, participé en una increíble experiencia de campamento. Camp Paivika, para aquellos que han asistido, saben que es igual que cualquier otro campamento. Había numerosas actividades, yo hice algunas de baloncesto en silla de ruedas con los campistas, que incluían juegos, concursos de talentos, excursiones por la naturaleza, manualidades, natación y mucho más. Tal vez a diferencia de otros campamentos, la comida era deliciosa y muy sana, aunque los campistas ponían nata montada en sus tortitas. (Incluso había churros recién horneados y tortillas fritas).
El personal parecía muy atento y centrado en sus tareas. Incluso había un grupo de personal de México. Entre el personal y los voluntarios también había personas con discapacidad.
Lo más importante para mí del Campamento Paivika y Ability First es que han nivelado el terreno de juego y llevan décadas haciéndolo. También me recuerda el hecho de que debe haber acceso para todos, algo que realmente no cuesta mucho. Aplaudo los esfuerzos de Ability First/Camp Paivika por hacer del mundo un lugar mejor para todos. Volveré dentro de tres semanas para el campamento familiar. Espero ver a algunos de ustedes allí.
Alimento para el pensamiento-Estados Unidos continúa cambiando en términos de nuestra política. Al igual que muchos otros, creo que la violencia política, y la violencia en general, no es apropiada para resolver problemas. Sin embargo, como todos sabemos, la violencia forma parte de nuestra vida cotidiana y está entretejida en la historia y el tejido de nuestra nación.
A veces publico lo que podría describirse como artículos políticos en mi página personal de Facebook, pero hago todo lo posible por ser respetuoso. Conozco a personas políticamente opuestas a mí. Las considero personas con experiencias muy diferentes a las mías. Al menos podemos hablar y no tenemos que hablar de política. Sí, es difícil para mí, pero en el fondo todos intentamos vivir nuestras vidas y encontrar algo de satisfacción y paz en la medida de nuestras posibilidades. Cuanto más podamos hablar y respetar a los demás, mejor será para el futuro de nuestra especie.
Tenemos muchas actividades en marcha. Estamos planeando nuestras temporadas de senderismo y golf, con un equipo de las Olimpiadas Especiales para el golf.
