Please join us as we strive to Keep the Flowers Blooming!

It means so much to the community to have the HCP open and operating and having some semblance of normalcy during this difficult and challenging time. It will be a positive sign for all of us that we are getting through this together and with the recent arrival of vaccines, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This past year, we have relied on our Members, donors, volunteers and staff more than ever for their support. The Gardens are flourishing thanks to all of you! As a charity, HCP exists to highlight horticulture by investing in all aspects of gardening and bringing the benefits of gardening to thousands. We depend on our hard-working team of volunteers who give over 15,000 hours a year of their time, plant sales, special events, tuition fees, grants, memberships, daily admissions, sponsorships and donations for the ongoing success of the Garden.

We value and appreciate the generosity of our donors and ask you to consider making a gift to help Keep the Flowers Blooming. Your donation will help us grow our gardens, providing a seasonal masterpiece for all to enjoy.

If you are able to donate, please visit our online donation page. Donations are also accepted over the phone and in person.

Once again, thank you and please stay safe.

Rhubarb.png

Rhubarb has always meant the coming of spring for me. The minute I see those enormous leaves and red stalks coming up through the ground and taste the first dish of stewed rhubarb, I know that spring has truly arrived!

Rhubarb is an easy to grow, long-lived perennial. Grow in a sunny, well-drained area and top dress with compost or an organic all-purpose fertilizer each spring and you will have plenty of stalks for your own use and to share with friends. Rhubarb sends up large flower stalks that should be removed as they begin to form so you’ll be able to keep picking tender stalks right through the summer into the fall.

Every spring, I make rhubarb ginger jam with a recipe that has been in my family for decades:

Rhubarb Ginger Jam

4 cups rhubarb, chopped into 1” pieces

2-2 ½ cups sugar

Grated zest of 1 lemon

Grated fresh ginger or finely chopped crystallized, to taste

Bring to a rolling boil and simmer, stirring frequently, until thickened. Ladle into sterilized jars and enjoy a taste of spring all year long!

PlantSaleAreaMay.png

Last month was our 3-day online Spring Plant Sale. The response was excellent! Thank you to everyone who supported us by purchasing online. I also want to thank the HCP staff, PHC students and volunteers who helped make this happen.

Our onsite plant sale area is now restocked and open during regular garden hours (Thursday - Sunday, 10:00am - 4:00pm) with new plants added weekly. Our ever-popular hardy fuchsias will be available in late May. The tomato and veggie starts are coming along and will be available for the May long weekend.

Cheers to a good growing season!
Linda

Rhododendron 'Seaview Sunset' (left) and Anenome nemorosa

The beginning of May, the real start of summer and so many different plants are coming into bloom.

Apple trees (Malus domestica) are covered in flowers and now the miracle occurs – when insects of many sorts flit and fly from flower to flower searching for sweet nectar but inadvertently carrying pollen from one bloom to the next. Without those myriad insects we would never get apples at all what a debt of gratitude we owe them and it is a permanent reminder of our need to stop using pesticides.

Mexican orange (Choisya ternata) is also now in flower but most spectacular of all are the rhododendrons. Every day another colour bursts out in the Rhodo Garden – pinks, yellows, reds and lilacs, whites, crimsons and oranges. How can a single genus display so many different colours? On large trees and small bushes, with both massive blooms and small ones. I have been captivated gazing at the varied colours and spotted markings of some of the varieties. Rhododendron 'Seaview Sunset' is a mixture of dusky pink and pale yellow, R. 'Golden Witt' has pure yellow flowers but with deep red spots on the lower petals. And R. 'Mrs. Betty Robertson' is creamy pink with crimson markings. Don't miss this moment to come and enjoy them.

This too is the time for Trilliums and Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum). As you walk down the main path to the rhododendrons they are to be seen particularly in the Fusion Garden to your right and there is quite an array of trilliums, flower colours varying from deep red to bicoloured pink and white. Flowering currants (Ribes) too are now at their best with their dangling flowers in pinks, reds and whites.

Something that has stimulated me to do a little research is the seasonal appearance of a carpet of anemones in the Winter Garden and Takata Garden. Above a mat of finely cut foliage are carried little white star-like flowers and, having seen them all across Canada, I had instantly named them Anemone canadensis, the Canada anemone. But on looking them up and speaking with Linda I discover I am wrong. The native anemone has five petals while all those in the gardens have seven or more. It turns out therefore that they are actually Anemone nemorosa, the European wood anemone, and we are fortunate to have a number of different varieties thanks to the generosity of a past member. There are simple seven-petalled ones but also patches of doubles, a faintly blue-tinged variety, A. nemorosa 'Robinsoniana', and in the Takata Garden a vivid pink one. We even have a smaller yellow one which it turns out is another species altogether, Anemonoides ranunculoides. We live and learn.

AlbertOrchard.JPG

Albert is a well-known figure around The Gardens at HCP and has several visitors who come to see him just as much as they do the gardens. One of his biggest fans refers to him as a “work of art” and most would agree. For those who have not had the privilege of meeting Albert in person, he is a large orange cat who resides in the gardens. Or rather, he used to reside in the gardens and some of you have been enquiring about his whereabouts and wellbeing.

Although Albert generally presents himself as dapper and handsome, he does have a rather serious heart condition that requires frequent medication. As a result, he has taken early retirement from his PR position at the Gardens to move in with one of our staff for full-time care. Albert now lives with Community Education Coordinator Cheri Le Brun and her husband, as well as her small-but-mighty dog Poppy and a timid border collie called Drum. Albert is one of the pack - some might say the leader of the pack. He spends his days being pampered, lazing around in a beautiful orchard and “admiring” the birds. Although he misses the Gardens and his many public admirers, he dutifully accepts the luxuries that retired life has to offer. Albert’s exact birthday has never quite been pinned down, but we celebrate it over the May long weekend and he is turning 7 years old this year. Happy Birthday, Albert!

HeirloomVegetableGardening.jpg

Heirloom Vegetable Gardening
by William Woys Weaver

A master gardener’s guide to planting, seed saving and cultural history. You could say that seeds connect us to our future, and heirloom seeds also connect us to our past. When we plant seeds this spring, we will be hoping and working for future harvests. When our ancestors saved seeds from their harvests, they also dreamed of the future. When we plant their heirlooms we are carrying on the tradition of planting a wide assortment of seeds and plants cultivated for characteristics such as flavor and yield. In Heirloom Vegetable Gardening, William Woys Weaver documents plant histories as well as stories and lore about 280 vegetables from artichokes to yams. Colour photos (like the one of the striped Listada de Gandia eggplant) make choosing just what to plant a challenge, and the many line drawings add a sense of history and character to the vegetables discussed. While the definition of “heirloom” seeds is under debate (post-war? 100 years?) and the reasons for growing them vary, it is generally agreed that they are invaluable for people and the earth. So consider borrowing this HCP Library book for a good look at what the ‘heirloom’ talk is all about.
