Introducing Math Out Loud
A new monthly lecture series from SUMM

Math doesn’t have to stay on the page.

Math Out Loud is our brand-new speaker series designed for the curious, the creative, and the “I didn’t know math could do that” crowd. Expect lively talks, surprising insights, and moments that change how you see the world.

No prior math knowledge required—just bring your curiosity.

Our First Speaker: Dan Finkel

We’re kicking things off on April 29 with educator, puzzle creator, and founder of Math for Love, Dan Finkel.

His work has reached millions through TED-Ed and beyond—and now he’s bringing it live to Seattle.

Billiard Balls and Laser Beams

Imagine turning on a light in a room made entirely of mirrors.
Would the whole room light up… or could some parts remain in darkness?

To answer that, Dan will take us into a world of reflective geometry—connecting:

  • Solar Power
  • Ships set on Fire
  • Juggling
  • Elliptical Billiards
  • Eavesdropping at a Distance
  • ...and even unsolved problems

This is math that moves, surprises, and sticks with you.

April 29 | 6:00–7:00 PM (VIP reception to follow)
North View Lounge, Museum of Flight

  • General Admission: Free (suggested donation $25)
  • VIP Experience: Reserved Seating + Post-event Reception ($70)

Coming Soon to Math Out Loud

We are thrilled to announce the next two visionaries joining our series:

  • Talithia Williams: A renowned statistician and author who excels at making data accessible and inspiring. She’ll show us how data empowers us to understand our health and our lives in ways we never imagined.

  • Jacqueline Cordes: An award-winning composer who transforms sound into color through her synesthetic approach to music. She’ll explore the mathematical side of music, using the Fibonacci sequence and examples like Radiohead to show how structure shapes both sound and color.

Your participation—and support—helps us continue offering free and sliding-scale access to programs like this.

Why we’re doing this

Math Out Loud is more than just a lecture—it’s a community-driven series designed to spark a love of math in everyone. By connecting mathematics to art, history, and social science, we show that math isn’t just a subject in school; it’s a lens for understanding our world.

Come hear math like you’ve never heard it before.

Save the Date: May 8

A Golden Evening to Benefit SUMM
Spring Auction + Fund-A-Need

Join us for a cocktail-style evening celebrating the beauty and joy of mathematics—featuring a live auction and Fund-A-Need. The evening will conclude with a special live performance by Allison Henrich, featuring mathematical rope tricks that tie patterns and problem-solving into beautifully knotty conclusions

May 8 is no accident: 5 and 8 sit next to each other in the Fibonacci sequence.

Your participation—and support—helps us continue offering free access to Math Out Loud and other SUMM programs, ensuring that the beauty of math remains accessible to all.
