SPRING 2025
A Message from our Executive Director | Gala Tickets on Sale
Response Plan | Adult Ed Success Story
Special Education Support | How to Get Involved
Dear Onward House Supporters,
As we welcome spring, I want to take a moment to reflect on both the challenges we face and the strength of the partnerships that make our work possible. Across the nonprofit sector, shifts in federal funding threaten programs our communities rely on — early childhood education, immigrant support services, food access, and more. These uncertainties highlight the importance of coming together to protect and strengthen the support systems families depend on.
At Onward House, we are responding by strengthening partnerships, advocating for policies that protect our most vulnerable, and equipping families with the resources they need. Together, we are not just addressing immediate challenges—we are buildinga future where every child and family has the opportunity to thrive.
Spring is a season of renewal, and thanks to our collective efforts, families are finding stability, children are preparing for success, and our community continues to have a trusted place to turn in times of need. Your partnership—whether through collaboration, volunteering, or support—fuels this impact and allows us to continue our 132-year legacy as a pillar of safety and opportunity.
As we look ahead, we invite you to stand with us. One of the most impactful ways to support Onward House is by joining us at our 2025Gala on Thursday, June 5th. This special evening will celebrate the power of community and raise critical funds to keep our programs strong. We hope to see you there!
Thank you for being a part of the Onward House community. Together, we are making a lasting impact.
With gratitude,
Mario F. Garcia

Standing in Solidarity: Our Response Plan
In light of the new administration’s executive orders and escalating threats to the communities we serve - including immigrant children and families - and nonprofits as a whole, Onward House is responding with action. We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting families through direct services, advocacy, and strategic partnerships.
Expanding Essential Services: Our Food Pantry, a critical resource for hundreds of children and families each month, nowoperatestwo days per week to meet growing demand.
Providing Trusted Information and Resources: We are hostingongoing workshops, trainings, and other events to equip our community with critical knowledge. Topics include Know Your Rights, Emergency Guardianship Planning, and more.
Building Stronger Community Protections: We recognize that many of our neighbors are facing heightened uncertainty. That’s why Onward House is strengthening partnerships with trusted legal and community-based organizations. By bridging the gap between trusted direct service providers and the children and families who need them most, we are addressing both urgent needs and systemic barriers. More details on our long-term vision will be shared at the Gala.

Participant Update: Shelly's Story
When Shelly first joined Onward Neighborhood House, she was looking for a way to improve her digital skills and open new doors for her family. She enrolled in virtual computer literacy classes during the pandemic, and her journey since has been nothing short of inspiring.
Last summer, we shared Shelly's story when she had just earned her associate’s degree. Now, she’s taking the next big step—pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, with her sights set on a career in computer engineering. Her success has motivated her children, who have since enrolled in school, inspired by their mother’s dedication and pursuit of education.
Shelly beams with joy as she holds up her hard-earned diploma at her May 2023 graduation.
Despite her busy college schedule, Shelly continues to return to Onward House to address gaps in her knowledge, attending our Digital Literacy courses and working closely with our Adult Education instructors. She takes advantage of 1:1 coaching sessions and professional development workshops that equip her with tools to excel in her degree program and beyond.
Shelly's journey is made possible through our strong partnership with Wright College, which is celebrating 90 years of empowering students. Their collaboration with Onward House helps ensure that adult learners have access to high-quality education, career pathways, and the support they need to succeed.
Her story is a testament to what’s possible when determination meets opportunity—and when organizations come together to uplift lifelong learners in our community. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!
Supporting Every Child: Special Education at Onward House
At Onward House, we believe every child deserves the tools and support they need to learn, grow, and thrive. That’s why our Early Childhood Education (ECE) curriculums are designed to foster inclusion, confidence, and success for all learners.
For many children, early intervention makes all the difference. We provide individualized support to help children with speech, developmental, and occupational needs thrive in the classroom and beyond. Through inclusive teaching practices, adaptive learning spaces, and one-on-one guidance, we ensure every child has the tools to succeed.
One exciting new addition is our Communication Board for ECE students, located on the playground. This board provides a visual way for children to express themselves, particularly those with speech delays or communication barriers. By pointing to pictures and symbols, students can communicate their needs, make choices, and engage with peers and teachers more effectively.
Our goal is to create fully integrated classrooms where every child, regardless of ability, feels supported and included. Led by our Director of Special Education andSite Director,we’re training teachers in inclusive practices thatbenefit all students. By working in collaboration withfamilies, teachers, pediatricians, and our Family Support Workers, we ensure children receive the best possible care and services.
Together, we’re creating accessible classrooms, where every child can learn, play, and grow with confidence.
