Final Easter Season Video

use-wings%20flyer%20labeled.png

Here we are, on the last Wednesday in April. We thank you for walking on this journey with us as we have lifted up several of Metro's 2021 grant recipients through videos. We have one more for you. This week Lydia L. Davis shares about Project W.I.N.G.S., a ministry of Scott UMC. We hope you receive inspiration from this week's video message.

For everyone who has given to Metro during this year's Lenten and Easter seasons, we thank you! If you have not, do consider a gift today to help us reach our Lenten campaign goal of $8,000. We are about $1,000 from our goal!  All donations will go towards Metro's 2023 Grants program.

Metro's Grant Recipients

Metro%202022%20Cycle%201%20Grant%20Recipients.png

We are so pleased to announce this year's Cycle 1 grant recipients! Join us in congratulating these organizations and churches:

Brightwood Community Center's SPARK Youth Summer Camp

This summer will bring a reimagined summer program to the Martindale-Brightwood Community. This year's camp will serve 30-40 young people ages 8-12, as well as provide paid counselor opportunities to high school students, through BCC's partnership with TeenWorks. BCC is also partnering with local schools to follow-up in the fall to determine if camp participation has a positive impact on grades.

Irvington UMC Preschool Summer Camp

Up to 20 children ages 3 - 5 from the Irvington community will have the opportunity to attend a brand new camp during 5 consecutive Tuesdays this summer. Each of the five sessions will have a different theme, from animal science, camping, music, art and design, and STEM, with a Bible verse guiding each session's theme.

Lambswear Inc.'s Undie 500 and Socktober

Lambswear, Inc. a grassroots organization that provides gently used clothing to children throughout Marion and Hendricks counties, collects new underwear and socks each year. A grant from Metro Ministries to will be used to sponsor these two campaigns, in May and October, respectively.

Miracles & Blessings UMC's Neighborhood Youth Impact Project

Miracles & Blessings UMC plans to offer programming for youth at the church for six consecutive Saturdays this summer. The anticipated activities for youth will include: learning to play chess, learning urban gardening, educational sessions from various community leaders, as well as snacks and lunch meals. The goal of this new program is to engage area youth in positive activities in a safe space to learn, grow and socialize together.

Shirley-Wilkinson UMC's Bike STEM Program

This summer, two groups of up to 10 children per group will participate in a summer program focused on STEM skills, and each group will assemble a BMX bike. The program curriculum is intended for 3rd - 5th graders, and older youth will be recruited as volunteers.

Watch for photos and stories later this year, as we follow these amazing programs in the coming months. These are examples of why you should give to Metro Ministries and how Metro applies your generosity throughout the Central District.

Central District Gatherings

district%20gathering.png

If you have not marked your calendars to attend one of the upcoming Central District gatherings, I encourage you to do so. If there is any confusion on who these gatherings are for, they are intended for laity, clergy and those who are curious.

These are opportunities to gain accurate information about the current realities facing the United Methodist Church. There will be no open mic for theological debates; however, there will be opportunities to raise pertinent questions.

The Central District Gatherings will be:

Saturday, April 30 at noon, Greenwood UMC

Sunday, May 1 at 3:00 pm, Lawrence UMC

Sunday, May 1 at 6:00 pm, Chapel Hill UMC

Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 pm, via Zoom (Zoom link coming)

These gatherings will be a time for worship, providing information and an intentional time of prayer. Each gathering will last no more than 75 minutes, and the same information will be presented at each gathering.

Family Promise "Night Without a Bed" Campaign

fp%20logo.jpg

Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis kicked off this year's #NightWithoutABed campaign on April 1, where they joined with churches and organizations to raise funds and to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in the Greater Indianapolis area.

Several United Methodist churches in and around Indy have partnered with Family Promise for a number of years, many having served as host sites until the COVID-19 pandemic suspended that temporary family shelter program.

The fundraising campaign officially launched April 1, with a challenge for churches, organizations and individuals in friendly fundraising competition. The campaign will conclude on April 30, with an opportunity to spend a night without a bed. University UMC will host a Community Sleepout in the church parking lot and on the church grounds. Beginning at 7pm, participants will hear first-person stories of families' paths from homelessness to housing. There will also be a DJ on hand, fire pits with s'mores, awards and more.

To participate in the sleepout at University UMC, email info@fpgi.org with your name and whether you need a parking space or if you will be bringing a tent and will need tent space. Click HERE for more information about #NightWithoutABed.

Community Compass

Community Compass is a tool created by Indy Hunger Network and has two key ways to connect individuals with food resources near them. The first is an app for smart phones that automatically provides food resources based on where the individual is. The second is the ability to text for food resources if an individual does not have a smart phone. Check out details of Community Compass. This very valuable tool now works in the donut counties as well as Marion County!
