This edition immediately follows our 30th Anniversary Guild Gathering and Future of Forest Stewardship Workshop.
Consistent with Guild Gatherings throughout time, the event provided a space where we built and strengthened connections, learned from and inspired each other, and doubled down on our commitment to forests and all who depend on them.
Much more will come soon in debrief and synchronized action out of this event. This morning, I'll share how heartened I am, hearing attendees brand new to the Guild say they felt welcomed, valued, empowered, and impressed by the friendliness and dedication of this community. Not only did they discover alignment with their values, they felt a sense of belonging among initial strangers. This founding experience continues strong.
All this, while we dug into a ton of work together to identify opporunities and barriers, and envision new solutions to unprecidented conditions within our work and ecosystems. There was a mourning for things lost, like more predictable snowfalls and more reliable economic factors, with a wholehearted readiness to move through that, toward a different but healthy and abundant future. The collective forward-leaning energy is pretty magical among us.
Event sponsors told me it was worth the investment. That's a huge honor for staff and collective accomplishment of this entire community.
Thank you so deeply to every person who was part of this gathering, for being here and for your contributions great and small.

Zander and I first met at the 2005 Guild Gathering in Santa Fe on the field trip at Santa Clara Pueblo. We were visiting what was at the time, the largest high severity burn scar in New Mexico, and learning from the Tribe how they were leading and innovating in post-fire recovery. I didn’t know that Zander would be my friend and colleague for the next 20 years.

In July 2026, more than 40 people representing 21 agencies, businesses, tribes, and nonprofits came together for a peer exchange field visit to several locations on the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina. The group discussed how the state-federal shared stewardship framework was being used in the disaster recovery context.

Guild Chainsaw Safety and Wildfire Preparedness Workshops Build Skills, Confidence, and Community Connections in Western NC

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on Western North Carolina in September 2024, the Forest Stewards Guild stepped in to support community resilience by offering hands-on training in chainsaw safety and wildfire home protection. This past spring, the Guild hosted three beginner-level chainsaw workshops that blended technical instruction with community-building and empowerment.
