Dear Pam:

I hope that this email finds you safe. Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc across Pennsylvania. Its spottiness may lull some into thinking it was a mild storm—but it was anything but mild. As we all—individuals, volunteers, park and forest staff—continue to recover from the storm and the associated damage, know that we at PPFF are here if you need our assistance.

Labor Day was once considered the unofficial end to summer, yet with warm September and October days and increased participation in outdoor recreation—along with the many fall events hosted by friends groups—we know that you are still busy. Please remember to share your events with us and we will be sure to add them to the calendar. Need some handouts or items to have for visitors? Contact Jenna and she can share items from our tabling materials.

Yours in the Outdoors,

Marci

DO

Sunday, October 3rd is the annual Walk in the Penn's Woods event sponsored by PSU 's Center for Private Forests. PPFF is signed on this year as a sponsoring organization and we'd love to have a good showing from Friends for events on this lovely autumn day.

Attached is an invitation article you might share. If you are planning to host an event, please let Pam know. We can make sure it's included on the WIPW website and on our own Calendar of Events as well.

DO TOO

If your chapter has not yet signed on to the letter in support of House Bill 1694, please take a moment to do so. This bill limits volunteer liability—protecting you and your volunteers. PPFF has actively been working on the development and introduction of this bill. As liability insurance costs climb, it has forced some groups to close their doors.

If you aren't the group chair, check in with them and make sure you're on board. Sign up at https://ppff.online/hb1694.

And feel free to share the letter with other volunteer organizations with whom you might work.

KNOW

The Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation supports Senate Bill 525, a bill that would set aside a portion of the American Rescue Plan funding for investment in projects in our state parks and forests. Five hundred million dollars would be set aside—shared among the Department of Environmental Protection for Clean Water, the Department of Agriculture for Land Preservation and water quality, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for projects in parks and forests. You can learn more about the bill at the Take Action Center in our website.

The infrastructure needs in our parks has risen to over $1.4 billion. To learn more about the needs, visit our new story map with a click to the box on the PPFF home page

Feel free to share the map through your social media channels. A share button is available right from the map.

This article from the June 2021 issue of Men's Health posits an interesting challenge - the 20/5/3 ratio of time in the outdoors for health and well-being.

  • 20 minutes a day, three times a week just being outside
  • 5 hours a month in a more forested space
  • 3 days a year off-the-grid, camping and unplugged

How are you doing with this ratio? Could make a good question for your readers and members!
