, Earth Month was chock full of connecting with hundreds of Americans in person and sharing our mission. From presenting at Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah National Park to leading a nature walk in Tysons Forest to celebrating the grand opening of Seven Bends Native Nursery, we lifted up nature and all that we can do to live a more sustainable lifestyle. We’re grateful for all of you who are taking care of Earth, our one and only home!

Earth Month Highlights

We were honored to be the featured nonprofit at this year's ALX Dog Walk and Sustainability Festival in Alexandria. Sustainability Matters was front and center as we led the dog walk with local Girl Scouts. Our executive director, Andrea, helped judge the Plastic Art Competition, where local artists transformed discarded materials into stunning works of eco-art. Check out our video of the winning art! Thank you to our board chair, Rachel, for spearheading this partnership and to everyone who stopped by our booth or joined the festivities. We felt energized, inspired, and maybe a little in love with a few furry friends we met along the way.

We also forged an exciting new partnership with the 7th grade students and teachers at Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn, Virginia. Together we planted a new native meadow on the W&OD Trail along Loudoun Water's easement, and the students' "seed balls" project was a finalist in a Chesapeake Bay watershed contest! The school is right next door to the beloved park, so our meadow will serve as a wonderful outdoor classroom for many years to come.

If you’re curious what a “seed ball” is, be sure to watch Kenny’s video about how to make your own!

We gathered on a lovely, windy day at Jim Barnett Park to celebrate the Winchester Meadow's signage and bench installation. And many thanks to The Phil, a publication giving voice to Virginia nonprofits, which highlighted us in an Earth Day article about our overall mission and programs. What a great month filled with even more!

Thank you SIM!

As a nonprofit organization, we can only achieve our mission through the generous support of our community. That’s why we are so grateful for a $5,000 donation from the Society of Information Management - National Capital Region.  Amazing!
