The Dementia Guide: 10 Questions Families Ask About Dementia (Answered Clearly) — Northwest Ohio

Focus more on how you respond than what you say. Include them in conversations, avoid correcting them, and validate their feelings. Remember: behavior is communication, not intentional misbehavior.
3. How do I keep them safe at home without taking away independence?
Early planning helps loved ones remain at home longer while reducing emergencies. Safety tools like door alerts, supervision for medications or driving, and environmental adjustments can help. Resistance to safety changes is common and doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong thing.
4. What is sundowning, and how can I manage it?
Sundowning causes confusion and agitation later in the day. A consistent routine, bright light in the morning, calm evenings, and limiting caffeine or sugar late in the day can reduce symptoms.
5. Why is social interaction important in dementia care?
Social isolation accelerates cognitive decline. Simple engagement — music, conversation, games, or shared tasks — improves mood, preserves dignity, and supports brain health.
6. How does physical therapy help someone with dementia?
Physical therapy improves balance and strength, reducing fall risk. Falls often trigger rapid decline, so maintaining mobility is critical.
7. How should I respond to dementia-related behaviors?
Behaviors often signal unmet needs. Always rule out medical issues like pain, infection, or discomfort first. Look for non-verbal cues and address the underlying cause rather than the behavior itself.
8. How long can I manage caregiving on my own?
Caregiver burnout is real. Accepting help isn’t failure — it’s responsible caregiving that protects both you and your loved one.
9. What are the benefits of respite care?
Respite care provides temporary relief with trained professionals, lowering stress and helping families keep loved ones at home longer.

Romance Scams Continue to Break Hearts and Bank Accounts
BBB is seeing a troubling rise in romance scam reports, with 2025 highlighting just how advanced and costly these schemes have become.
Across the U.S., victims are losing thousands — sometimes their life savings. In Colorado, one man reported losing more than $100,000 after believing he was in a genuine online relationship. In Texas, a Houston-area couple was sentenced to prison for running “heartless” romance scams that stole more than $3 million from victims nationwide.
These scams are also part of a global problem. International investigations have uncovered organized rings accused of stealing more than $100 million worldwide, often using stolen photos, fake profiles, and AI-generated messages to appear real.
Banks and regulators warn that romance scams are increasingly tied to cryptocurrency and fake investment schemes, sometimes called “pig-butchering” scams. Victims range from young professionals to retirees.
BBB’s advice:
Slow down in online relationships
Be cautious of anyone who avoids meeting in person
Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you haven’t met
If something feels off, talk to a trusted friend or family member and report it to BBB

A major Medicare fraud scheme is popping up nationwide, involving fake charges for medical catheters—often totaling $11,475—that were never ordered or received.
Scammers are billing Medicare using stolen personal information, hoping the charges go unnoticed. Unfortunately, many Medicare recipients don’t review their statements closely, which can allow fraudulent claims to slip through.
Moo’s advice:
Review your Medicare Summary Notice every time you get one
Look for services or equipment you don’t recognize
Report anything suspicious to Medicare right away
Catching fraud early helps protect you—and helps stop scammers in their tracks. If something looks off, trust your instincts and speak up!
