Rents are rising significantly, up 20% to 30% over 2019 presenting a barrier to employment of teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, food service workers, retail, and general office staffing. There have been several efforts in Southern Maryland to address this problem. Affordable housing is being proposed for California, MD, targeting households earning 50-60% of the area median income.
